WSOP Main Event Heats Up
The 2006 WSOP heats up as the original 8,000 plus entrants are trimmed down. The ultimate champion will be bagging the highest prize in gaming history, a whopping $12 million.
The biggest competition with a record $82 million in prize money is underway as the World Series of Poker main event kicks off.
This year, the series also saw a record number of entrants with 8,773 players. The number will be whittled down until one remain, the ultimate champion that will bag the $12 million in prize money.
The event is being held at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, in an area with wall-to-wall poker tables. The participants are vying not only for the fame, prestige and the chance to go down in the history of poker, but to win the largest prize to be given away in any sporting activity.
Some owe the popularity of poker to the extensive media and internet coverage. Poker has been enjoying unprecedented popularity in recent years.
Phil Helmuth has been knocked out early in the game, and has blamed the unfortunate event in “horrendous luck”.
With amateurs pitted against seasoned poker pros, this year’s main event of the no-limit Texas Hold’em will have guaranteed cash prizes for the top 873 finishers, with the top 12 finisher guaranteed a million a piece.
The defending champion is Joe Hachem of Australia, and with entrants from 56 different countries, it is not surprising if this year’s winner is also from overseas.
